Lutfi Zayed takes everyday subjects and gives them a universally intelligent and humorous twist in the latest exhibition at Jacaranda Images.
Lutfi Zayed is a graphic designer who prefers not to suffer in a corporate world but let his mind roam freely exploring concepts and ideas for his own amusement. While following the disciplines of aesthetic and design, Lutfi lets the characters in his head loose.
In his first solo exhibition of his prints, Lutfi follows two directions. The first is more conceptual with deceptively simple compositions where wit and wordplay are achieved with visual puns, much along the lines of the graphic designers of the 1950s such as the legendary Raymond Savignac.
In Lutfi’s other work, a more colourful and vibrant illustrative style is shown with complex scenarios and an array of characters creating snapshots of a crazy world. These scenarios are built around what looks like a wild multi-headed monster but are in fact carefully controlled placements with all the diverse characters that make up society.
” I see my work as the expression of various ideas that are inspired by subjects of everyday life, elements of popular culture and basic traits of random objects, and that are shaped by making connections and placing them in compositions that give them a life of their own. Every piece I work with aims to engage its audience, provoke thought, spark a point of interest or just bring a smile to the face or the mind.
“Diversions” is a collection of some of my persistent thoughts taken away from their natural starting point as doodles on a napkin, from pages in a sketchbook, or prints in a retail store to be placed on walls as for an appreciate eye for all the artistic characteristics they carry. ” Lutfi Zayed
Lutfi Zayed
Lutfi Zayed is an independent illustrator and visual artist based in Amman, Jordan. After starting his career as an employed graphic designer, he decided to take on another path which allows him more imaginative and artistic freedom. Nevertheless, his design background remains apparent in his style and approach in producing peculiar illustrations with a characteristic sense of wit and humor.
Zayed’s work can be seen in different and varied outlets from exhibitions in galleries to commissioned artworks, as well as apparel and many other products.
