DO YOU VESPA?

Vespa, the iconic Italian symbol for freedom and imagination is celebrated in art in Amman this spring.
From its humble beginnings in 1946, the Vespa (meaning ‘wasp’ in Italian) has fascinated millions of people, giving the world a unique image of Italian style synonymous with freedom and fashion. Audrey Hepburn with Gregory Peck in the 1952 film ‘Roman Holiday’ epitomised the era’s love for life.
In recent years, commuters have purchased Vespa worldwide to manage city living – shortage of parking, increased traffic congestion, pollution and the increased running costs of cars. For the people of Amman this is no exception and the Vespa is one solution to getting around the city efficiently. With this foundation, Jacaranda Images in association with Darwzeh Motors the Official Vespa dealer in Jordan has commissioned 4 of Amman’s brightest graphic designers for this exhibition to produce limited edition prints which will sit side by side with reproductions of some of Vespa’s classic advertising images.
Work by Mo Awwad, Mike V Derderian, Lutfi Zayed and Ibraheem Alawamleh will feature in the exhibition showing how Vespa fits within the new Amman psyche.
Vespa has long been associated with art commissioning the great graphic artists of their time such as Raymond Sauvignac and Bernard Villemot to create their promotional campaigns in the 1950s and 60s. Their dedicated museum holds a permanent exhibition of original artworks including items which toured venues such as the Guggenheim in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Also on display there is a model personally customised by Salvador Dalí in 1962. The concept of ‘Do You Vespa?’ takes the artistic connection further with the global community that loves their Vespa creating their own images and multimedia to share their experiences and feelings about owning a Vespa.
