‘30 DAYS IN LUXOR’

Hakim Jamain displays 13 etchings inspired by Ancient Egypt at Jacaranda Images during October. 

This exhibition explores the relationship between artist, environment and ancient history though the delicate etching process. Hakim has been influenced by his surroundings, both tangible and intangible, as well as the remarkable monuments that are Luxor. Palm trees, geckos, and hieroglyphics sit side by side in the works reflecting the complete experience of the artist in this unique environment.

Artists Statement

I was fortunate to be selected by the Egyptian Ministry of Culture to stay for one month in the land of Egypt’s ancestors, Luxor. 

The thought of sleeping side by side with the artistic genius of ancient times, gave life a completely new taste.  

Everything about Luxor gave life a different meaning. The wind carries the perfume of Nefertiti. From the valley you hear the sounds of the Habu wind, the whispers of the kings and queens, of Ramesses and Hatshepsut.

Then there is the Nile, the warm hearted mother, sending fresh air to soften the atmosphere, its blue giving lustre to sparkling golden sand.

 My thoughts fought with each other as to which would be the first to leave its mark on the zinc plate surface, blurring the distinction between my thoughts and dreams.

After thirty days in Luxor, I could not imagine time has an ending. The thirty days continue to be in my thoughts, instilling in me a sense of calm and stability. 

I do not think there is a beginning nor an end, it is all relative.

Luxor, the taste stays in the soul. Here, for you, the taste of Luxor.
