Ben Playle
Ben Playle is a British stencil artist based in Jordan. He uses a refined street art technique to create complex multi-layered hand cut stencils, which are then sprayed up using aerosol. Stencils can take weeks to cut with the result only being revealed once each layer is overlaid and sprayed. A retrospective of his work is shown through the paste-ups and many are available through Jacaranda Gallery.
Inspired by the urban landscape of central Amman, Ben set out to try and capture the density and chaotic feel of the city. The perspective of the hills and the buildings is used to achieve a sense of depth and to capture the layering of humanity residing on the hills of Amman. It took two months of cutting to create the stencils and further weeks to perfect the colour palette. It has been a test of patience as well as skills in stenciling. Using a new technique, Ben feels he has achieved a new level of complexity, as seen in the finished pieces.
