‘Fall and Expulsion’
Homage to Michelangelo

In Iyad Kan’aan’s latest work, he refers to an influential work from Michelangelo to create a contemporary analogy for the exploration of knowledge. The works show at Jacaranda Images from the 9th April.
When he first observed the Sistine Chapel, especially Michelangelo’s ‘The Fall of Man’ and the ‘Expulsion from the Garden of Eden’, at 8 years old, Iyad Kan’aan did not know how memorable the works would be for him. The images have constantly been referred to in his works, paintings and collages. “The artworks were an introduction to a long series of paintings and experiences, in an aesthetics continuum that affects various aspects of the painting and my life”.
Various symbols, the apple in particular, represent new knowledge and the human desire for new experience, without the fear developed from years of conditioning. The spirit of Michelangelo is given a contemporary and graphic treatment with blocks of colour forming poetic and abstract relationships of modern life.
Iyad Kan’aan
Kan’aan, born in Ben-ghazi in 1972 has completed his Masters Degree in Plastic Art in Lebanon. In 1998 he received his Postgraduate Diploma in Drawing & Painting also from the Institute of Fine Arts, Lebanese University.
He has participated in many international exhibitions throughout Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Sudan, Bangladesh, Morocco and Iran
Had three solo exhibitions in Jordan & Lebanon – 2005 at City Hall Amman, in 2010 at Foresight Art Gallery Amman and in January 2011 at Piece Unique, Beirut.
He has a poetry album titled ‘The City is a River’, published in 2005
