This collection of artworks explores Amman as a city located in the heart of the Arab world, and how it appears to both outsiders and its own inhabitants. The collection offers a unique perspective of the city.
The artworks investigate how Amman, which has evaded the turmoil that swept the region in the last few decades, has become a place for transients and wanderers who, like its own residents, contemplate individual salvation.
The artworks depict how a peculiar feeling pervades the city, making it feel like a “flower of the swamps,” as Badr Shakir al-Sayyab described himself in his poem “The Blind Prostitute”: “I am the flower of the swamps, weary of mud and clay,” expressing a sense of despair.Despite the apparent tranquility that visitors to Amman feel, as if it were a city that has escaped the question of the future, these drawings reveal an underlying emotional state of lurking anxiety, and sadness.
The drawings were inspired by poetic texts, conversations with friends, and, of course, the Arab reality of the past fifteen years.
YAMAN ABAZEED is an artist from Amman, Jordan. She studied English language and linguistics at the University of Science and Technology, then visual arts at the Institute of Fine Arts under the tutelage of artist Hazem Al-Nimrawi.
Yaman is interested in expressive art that stems from reality, challenges it, and raises its questions and problems. She attempts to bridge the gap between reality and the individual, making it familiar and less ambiguous through the use of symbolism, imagination and fantasy.
