Kholoud Mohammed’s first exhibition in Amman reflects the state of women in an ideal world where peace, confidence and beauty reign.
The monochromatic works possess strength from their boldness in design and simplicity of the subjects’ poses. Reminiscent of traditional Japanese compositions, the hand drawn illustrations could easily be woodcuts from the times when ‘Japonism’ was the latest influence on for artists like Aubrey Beardsley, Mucha and others of the mid to late 1800s.
Kholoud combines the Japonism lack of perspective and shadow with flat areas of black, placing her subjects off centre. Add to this the traditional ukiyo-e detail of patterned surfaces ‘a la’ Gustav Klimt and the work develops its own style, even more so when random Arabic lettering forms some of the patterns.
Coming from a environment where life has often been an uncertain battlefield, it is no wonder that Kholoud creates an ideal world where women live without conditions or societal pressures but in a peaceful and beautiful space with the confidence to be themselves.
Kholoud Mohammed
Kholoud Mohammed was born in 1977 in Basra Iraq. Has a bachelor in Accounting. A self confessed dreamer, her previous experience illustrating children’s books and for the newspaper in Iraq developed her skills and interest in producing more personal work reflecting the ideal world for women to exist in. She has participated in group shows in Iraq, this is her first solo exhibition in Amman.
